#17 Carlsbad Caverns (NM)

Grandiose comes to mind. Stalactites, stalagmites, draperies, popcorn and pearl formations. Much of the cave system is still being explored, but everything is huge. Traveling through the natural entrance (found in the 1920s when a local rancher thought he saw smoke, which actually turned out to be bats from the cave!!) we ventured 750 feet down – that’s 75 stories! We wandered over 2 miles in almost complete solidarity running into a few rangers we were able to ask questions.
